Construction work has begun on a new petrol station and convenience store near junction 14 of the M6 in Stafford, following a lengthy planning process.
The development, known as Stafford Gate Service Station, is being delivered by The Kay Group at Creswell Grove. It will form part of the wider Stafford Gate commercial development and is expected to open in 2027.
The Blackburn-based company, which operates petrol stations across the Midlands, North West and North Wales, announced in July that work had started on what it described as its 25th forecourt.
What is planned for the new site?
Stafford Gate Service Station is planned as a new petrol filling station with an accompanying convenience store. The Kay Group has previously confirmed that its Stafford development also includes plans for a Costa Coffee drive-thru.
The retailer renewed its agreement with Booker in July 2026 to supply its network of Londis convenience stores, with the forthcoming Stafford site included in the partnership.
The development follows what The Kay Group described as a 10-year planning process. The company had previously announced plans for Stafford Gate in 2019, when it indicated that a Costa drive-thru would form part of the site.
Although an exact opening date has not been announced, the company has identified 2027 as the expected opening year.
Application submitted for 24-hour opening
The Kay Group has also submitted a premises licence application to Stafford Borough Council for the new service station.
The application seeks permission for the premises to open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with alcohol available for consumption off the premises throughout those hours.
It also seeks permission to provide late-night refreshment indoors between 11pm and 5am each day.
The application does not mean the proposed licensing arrangements have already been approved.
Residents wishing to comment on the application must submit relevant representations to Stafford Borough Council by 5pm on Thursday 8 October 2026.
Representations can be emailed to ehlicensing@staffordbc.gov.uk.

Road improvements around Creswell Grove
The new petrol station forms part of the wider Stafford Gate commercial development near the M6.
Separate highway improvement works are already taking place along Creswell Grove and Eccleshall Road to provide access to the development and accommodate additional traffic.
The improvements include a new junction, an additional traffic lane on Creswell Grove, a pedestrian crossing, changes to pedestrian and cycling facilities, and associated drainage and utility works.
Staffordshire County Council says the roadworks began in May 2026 and are scheduled to continue in phases into January 2027.
The scheme is being funded by developer Strawsons Holding Limited, with Alto Construct delivering the highway improvements.
