Town centre pub and sports bar The Yard is closing its doors for a short transition period ahead of a relaunch under new management.
Located at Espley’s Yard off Newport Road, the venue confirmed the changes after 15 years under the current team. Over the years, the popular town centre site has operated under several identities, previously trading as Yates and The Crafty Sow before becoming The Yard.
The pub is inviting regulars and local visitors to join staff for a final farewell on Sunday 8 November 2026. Following Sunday’s service, the bar will close temporarily for several weeks to allow the management handover to take place.
Farewell from current team after 15 years
In an announcement shared on social media, the team reflected on 15 years of trade through name changes and revamps, thanking local customers for their support.
The management team said: “After 15 incredible years (and a few name changes), we’re closing our doors for a short few weeks.
“The Yard has been a place where we’ve celebrated the small moments and the big occasions together. From birthdays and after-work drinks to tense matchdays and unforgettable nights, we’ve shared so many special memories, and we want to say a heartfelt thank you to our guests and the local community for your loyalty and support.
“We’d love you to join the team on Sunday 8th November for a final ‘cheers’.”

Reopening under new operators
The venue confirmed that the upcoming closure marks the beginning of a new chapter rather than a permanent loss for Stafford’s hospitality scene.
The team added: “While it’s farewell from our current team, this is only the end of one chapter. After a brief closure, the venue will be reopening under new management and will continue serving the community for many more years to come. The new team look forward to welcoming you all back very soon.”
Further details on reopening dates and future plans under the incoming operators are expected to be announced over the coming weeks.
