Lines reopen between Stafford and Birmingham following overhead wire repairs

Rail lines between Stafford and Birmingham New Street have reopened following emergency repairs to damaged overhead wires, but passengers have been warned to expect major disruption until late afternoon.

All routes through the area were blocked from around 7am on Saturday 10 October after a fault damaged 25,000-volt overhead electric cables at Four Ashes, near Penkridge.

While Network Rail engineers have now completed repairs and reopened the lines, National Rail has extended its warning of major disruption until at least 4pm (16:00). Services continue to face cancellations, revisions, and delays of up to 60 minutes while trains and train crews return to their scheduled positions.

Residual delays across major operators

Three main operators travelling through Stafford remain affected by knock-on delays:

  • Avanti West Coast: Services linking Glasgow Central, Edinburgh, and Manchester Piccadilly with London Euston via the West Coast Main Line.
  • CrossCountry: Long-distance routes connecting Manchester with Birmingham, Bristol Temple Meads, Southampton Central, Bournemouth, and Paignton.
  • London Northwestern Railway: Services between Liverpool Lime Street and Birmingham New Street.

Network Rail engineering director Adam Checkley apologised to passengers affected by the issues at Four Ashes, confirming that teams worked through the morning to get lines reopened safely while urging passengers to check journeys before setting out.

Ticket validity extended and travel options

To assist stranded passengers, widespread ticket acceptance remains active across alternative train operators, including East Midlands Railway, LNER, TransPennine Express, Northern, Transport for Wales, West Midlands Railway, and the West Midlands Metro tram between Wolverhampton and Birmingham.

Avanti West Coast has confirmed that passengers holding tickets dated for Saturday 10 October can use them at any time on Sunday 11 October or Monday 12 October at no extra cost.

Rail replacement buses will continue to operate between Stafford and Wolverhampton to clear backlogs while timetables recover.

Passengers who experience delays of 15 minutes or longer can claim compensation under the Delay Repay scheme by submitting their tickets through their respective train operator.
