The fire was first reported at around 2.30pm, after smoke was seen coming from the area.
Fifteen fire engines were sent to the scene, alongside water carriers, hose reel jets, main jets and a high-volume pump.
The seat of the fire is off Chase Road, close to Coppice Hill and Brocton.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said a significant number of crews would remain in the area overnight to continue bringing the fire under control and prevent it from spreading further.

Staffordshire Police has also been helping to make the area safe and establish a cordon.
Although the fire has now been surrounded, emergency services said there was still a considerable amount of work to do.
