Final phase for M6 Junction 14 road scheme as Stafford Gate plans take shape

A major highways project creating access to the new Stafford Gate commercial development off the M6 is entering its final stages, with overnight closures scheduled ahead of the road fully reopening.

Work on the A5013 Creswell Grove, right next to Junction 14, began in May to construct a new junction and widen the carriageway. The works required an inbound one-way restriction towards Stafford to give construction teams safe access.

Staffordshire County Council has confirmed that overnight road surfacing will take place over five nights later this month, clearing the way for the one-way restriction to be lifted by the end of October.

What is coming to Stafford Gate?

The commercial scheme, backed by developer Strawsons Property, is set to introduce a mix of roadside retail and potential leisure facilities to the edge of the town.

Confirmed plans for the site include the new Stafford Gate service station. This element of the development will feature a petrol filling station, a Londis convenience store, and a Costa Coffee drive-thru.

In addition to the roadside services, a separate planning application has been submitted to Stafford Borough Council for a major health and racquets club on the site (application reference 26/41955/FUL). The proposal, submitted on behalf of David Lloyd Clubs, seeks permission to build a premium health club featuring a gym, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, racquet courts, a spa garden, and a family clubroom.

Unlike the roadside service facilities, the David Lloyd club remains subject to planning permission and is currently awaiting a decision from borough planners. Work on that facility cannot start unless formal approval is granted.

Five nights of overnight closures

To complete the final road surfacing on Creswell Grove, full overnight closures will be enforced along the affected stretch.

The night closures will run from Monday 19 October until Friday 23 October, operating between 10pm and 6am each night. A signed diversion route will be in place for motorists throughout the works.

Contractors expect to remove all main traffic management and lift the long-running one-way system by the weekend of 31 October.

Roundabout works and pedestrian refuge

The entire road scheme has been funded by Strawsons Property to facilitate access into the development.

The concluding phase of highways work will take place east of Junction 14, where crews will construct a new pedestrian refuge island and finish resurfacing work on the roundabout. Temporary traffic lights will manage vehicles while those remaining tasks are carried out.

Patrick Allen, cabinet support member for highways at Staffordshire County Council, thanked local residents and drivers for their patience during the scheme and noted that teams are looking forward to full completion in the coming weeks.
