A ten-year-old boy has received a special commendation after staying calm and calling 999 when a fire broke out inside his home in Penkridge.
Harrison Spruce discovered the fire on 1 September after a tumble dryer caught fire inside the family home.
He immediately alerted his mum, who evacuated the property with Harrison’s brothers and sisters. Harrison then called 999 and gave Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service control operators clear information about what was happening.
Calm 999 call helped firefighters
Despite the stressful circumstances, Harrison was able to provide his full address, details of the fire and confirmation that the family had safely left the property.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said the information helped crews understand the situation before they arrived.
Chief Fire Officer Glynn Luznyj later presented Harrison with a special commendation during a ceremony at Cannock Community Fire Station on Monday 28 September.
He said Harrison’s quick thinking, maturity and communication had contributed significantly to the safe outcome of the incident.
He added: “His action demonstrated exceptional courage, responsibility and awareness, serving as an excellent example to others.”
Fire service praises Harrison’s actions
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service highlighted Harrison’s response as an example of the importance of knowing what to do in an emergency.
After discovering the fire, Harrison first raised the alarm with his mum before calling 999 once the family had evacuated.
The service said he remained calm throughout the call and was able to give operators accurate information despite the pressure of the situation.
Harrison has now been formally recognised by the Chief Fire Officer for the way he responded.
